– mineral reunion –

mineral reunion - photo by: ryan sterritt

i went and saw mineral last night at the masquerade in atlanta. they rocked it out for sure, i couldn’t believe they sounded so good after not touring since 1997! i still have vivid memories of seeing them play in tampa and gainesville, florida on their farewell tour with the get up kids and jejune.

although they definitely looked older, mineral’s music still held up and sounded amazing live. it was exciting to see them play songs from endserenading as well. they had broken up before the album was released in 1998 and did not play those songs live back in the day.

on a side note, hot water music played upstairs at the masquerade last night as well. i was able to check them out after mineral played. i don’t know much of their music after their first few albums though, so i didn’t stay too long. it still felt like a fun florida-hardcore evening seeing those two bands play!

belle & sebastian at the tabernacle - photo by: ryan sterritt

belle & sebastian played an amazing show last night at the tabernacle! i forgot how great they were live and how personable stuart murdoch was. they recently recorded their new album in atlanta, so stuart had a lot to say about the atl. that included discussing both the atlanta streetcar and beltline, as well bashing the braves for moving to the burbs, which was subsequently followed by piazza, new york catcher. classic!

their setlist was top notch! they played songs from pretty much every album and also hit a couple of their eps, with lots of old favorites and deep cuts in the mix. they also played a few new songs, including a dance track about sylvia plath that was great.

hopefully it doesn’t take them another 11 years to come back to atlanta!

belle & sebastian are playing tonight at the the tabernacle, wahoo!!! we are big fans and it’s been 11 years since they played atlanta, so we are thrilled.

so far they’ve had some great looking set lists in miami and orlando, so i have high hopes for tonight. they’ve been playing plenty of old tunes for people like me!

there are tickets available, if interested. check out the rest of their tour dates.

– atlanta braves + weezer = summer fun –

atlanta braves + weezer = summer fun - photo by: ryan sterritt

tonights atlanta braves game had a pretty awesome promotion, a free weezer concert at turner field after the game! that’s one of the better ballpark promotions i’ve heard of, much more fun than a foam finger or bobble head.

i haven’t listened to weezer much since their green album, however the blue album and pinkerton still hold a special place for me. plus the chance to see them in combination with a braves game was too hard to pass up.

older weezer fans were definitely not let down. the setlist included early hits like my name is jonas, say it ain’t so, the sweater song & buddy holly, as well as later hits like island in the sun and hash pipe. the stage was set up around 2nd base and people who paid extra were able to go down on the field for the show, something i did not do. a ton of people stuck around for the show and there was a nice summer breeze, so it turned out to be a very fun evening.

on a side note, rivers cuomo commented that they had spent the previous day in peachtree city visiting his grandparents and that his mom was from their. i never knew he had georgia ties. i also didn’t realize that rivers daughter was now playing keyboards for the band! or maybe this was just a special show.

– outkast #atlast –

after playing 40+ festival dates without hitting atlanta, outkast finally announced a homecoming show at centennial olympic park this fall! they’ve been touring to “celebrate the 20th anniversary of their unique and influential sound.” we were lucky enough to get tickets this morning and are totally pumped.

not only did the show sell out in under an hour, outkast also added a second show and sold that out immediately. quite crazy! centennial olympic park can hold 40,000 people for concerts, so its impressive they sold out two shows so quickly.

– kirkwood spring fling 2014 –

this weekend is the 12th annual kirkwood spring fling, which is one of our favorite festivals in atlanta! besides being located around the corner from us in historic kirkwood, it is also the first festival where gub sold her craft goods, so it holds a special place in our hearts.

the spring fling features a 5k race on saturday morning, a kids area from 10am-4pm, an open air artist market from 10am-8pm with tons of crafty vendors, beer, food trucks, and live music, as well as a tour of homes and a bbq cook off.

admission to the festival is free and is once again located at bessie branham park. tickets for the tour of homes can be purchased at the festival or at local kirkwood businesses.

on a side note, we designed the volunteer t-shirts this year and think they look great! the design is up above in the header for your viewing pleasure. also be sure to check out photos from 2010 when our home was on the kirkwood tour of homes.

– wait, wait, don’t tell me live –

gub and i had so much fun at the atlanta recording of wait wait…don’t tell me at the fabulous fox theater last fall! we are huge fans of the npr program, so it was interesting to see how they pull everything off recording the show live.

our panelists were mo rocca, faith salie and roy blount, jr. it turned out both faith and roy grew up in the atlanta/decatur area, which seemed random. cdc director thomas frieden was the ‘not my job’ special guest and we were fortunate to have carl kasell announce the performance, he had been taking time off from the show. and of course, peter sagal was the host.

the entire performance was about two and a half hours, which they edited down to a one hour program. they finished the actual show in roughly two hours. at that point they re-recorded a few lines from the show that were stepped on or didn’t sound well. the audience had the option to leave or hang out for a q&a after they finished. we stuck around and were treated with 20 minutes worth of q&a with peter, carl and the panelists.

i have to admit it was pretty cool going to a show on a thursday and hearing the polished version on the radio 36 hours later. we had an amazing night and, as expected, the fabulous fox theater was a perfect venue for wait wait…don’t tell me!!!

you can download a podcast of the atlanta performance here.
