– living walls: paris on ponce –

here is another living walls mural in atlanta. you can find this gem on the back side of paris on ponce. it’s a collaborative mural by seattle-based christopher derek bruno, florida-based benjamin niznik & atlanta-based drew tyndell. i don’t know much about these guys, but i really like this mural! it’s tough catching the whole mural when there aren’t any u-haul trucks parked in front though.

check out our previous coverage of living walls work by greg mike, marco sueño and trek matthews and this great google map of the 2011 living walls murals.

here is another living walls mural in kirkwood that’s very close to our house! it’s by atlanta-based artist/designer greg mike, whose work can be found all around town, especially his loudmouf design. he also makes these large & small mad cans, which are fun.

greg’s kirkwood mural is great, we are excited to have such cool street art in our neighborhood! i have yet to drive by when that yellow van wasn’t parked in front though, so i don’t have any photos of the full mural. you can check out the whole design here while i wait for a photo opportunity.

here is a post we did a couple of years ago with some photos of greg’s work near the eyedrum. little did we know it was work he did for the 2010 living walls conference.

the next installment in our living walls coverage is a piece by marco sueño. this one is actually in kirkwood right near our house, which is pretty happening for our neighborhood.

marco is a peruvian street artist who affixes graphics on walls with wheat paste. the results can be amazing, as is the case here, but they also don’t last very long. i drove by his kirkwood piece this morning and there wasn’t much left on the walls. most of the art was peeling off or gone at this point. it also looks like an ape tag i see around town has been added.

hopefully we will get another, more permanent, living walls piece in its place.

there is a great non-profit organization in atlanta called living walls that brings artists from around the world to create murals throughout the city. it started out as just an annual conference but has transitioned into a year-round endeavor. they “seek to promote, educate, and change perspectives toward public space in our communities via street art.” over the last few years living walls has brought some amazing street art to atlanta and also gotten local communities involved.

we are going to try and cover the various murals living walls atlanta has produced. our first selection is a recent contribution by local atlanta artist trek matthews. you can find this piece in cabbage town, at carroll street and tennelle street near the back side of the cotton mill lofts. it’s a really amazing fox covered in various native american patterns. you should go check it out!

for an article on the production of the mural, head to brooklyn street art or the young blood blog.

they just painted a huge mural under the bridge near arizona ave and dekalb ave in kirkwood that is awesome! we wish they would have done a similar mural under the rocky ford rd bridge, ours is not nearly as fun.

UPDATE: this mural is actually part of living walls and is by atlanta artist hense. here is a previous post with another hense mural.

– the king is back –

the summer heat is right around the corner but luckily the king of pops is back with his handcrafted popsicles! we stopped by the other day for our first ones of the season. we had the green apple lemonade and arnold palmer (sweet tea & lemonade), which were both awesome.

you can be find the king of pops in the highlands at the corner of north ave and north highland ave from 3 – 7 pm on weekdays and 12 – 7:30 pm on weekends. he also lists his daily menu on twitter. today’s menu is: orange basil, raspberry lime, pomegranate margarita, banana puddin’, grapefruit mint, chocolate sea salt and mango, papaya & lime.

have you ever noticed the murals under the train tracks on ralph mcgill blvd near freedom pkwy? one side of the street is more graffiti-style and the other side has these cool bicyclists. the bicyclists side also has a beltline of atlanta logo, so it’s somehow affiliated with the atlanta beltline.

– ryan

UPDATE: these two murals are part of the art on the atlanta beltline campaign’s permanent collection. the bicyclist is by loss prevention collective and the abstract is by hence.

– pbr mural –

it’s been awhile, but i spotted another pbr painting in the virginia highlands. although many of the other pbr murals have been painted over at this point, it was cool to find one i hadn’t seen before!

be sure to check out the other murals we found around atlanta in june and august.

– wall art –

what started out as a goal to write a blog post every day for a month quickly turned into an entire month without any posts. well, we hope to get back into the swing of things with regular updates and postings.

here’s one…

i enjoy all the graffiti and murals found along dekalb avenue and that part of town and recently saw some new (at least new to me) artwork on the building next to eyedrum. there are obviously different artists and styles working together there. i was told the building is split into various artist spaces, some of whom probably worked on the wall art… way better than the beige blotches the neighborhood associations make when covering up graffiti & art.

i am diametrically opposed to the beige blotches.

– another pbr painting –

we spotted another pbr mural on the side of the graveyard tavern in east atlanta village. just when we thought we had seen them all, another one pops up.

be sure to check out the paintings in our june post, when we first started noticing the hand-painted ads around atlanta.
