i am really digging the new kishi bashi album lighght. for those interested, you can find a super limited version on gold speckled vinyl with a bonus 7″ at your local independent record store (ie. criminal records & decatur cd).
the album is quite eclectic and worth checking out for sure. you can currently stream it on npr for free.
we were in savannah this weekend for easter, which happened to coincide with record store day 2014. i was able to find a couple of locations that were participating though, so my dad and i decided to see what savannah had to offer. after a uneventful trip to rody’s (their shipment hadn’t arrived), my dad and i headed to graveface records & curiosities, which turned out to be awesome!
we didn’t get there until after noon, the joys of parenthood, so i missed out on the main items i was looking for (ie. chvrches, lcd soundsytem). it was still fun though. they were super packed and had a ton of great stuff, including a couple of items i found for my brother. i definitely plan on visiting graveface next time i’m in savannah!
i have to vent that although i still enjoy record store day, it’s definitely becoming overpriced. i really enjoy ultimate alternative waivers by built to spill and the first album by pinback, however i don’t need them on vinyl for $25.

the first new album by the afghan whigs in 16 years came out this week called do the beast via sub pop records. for those interested, you can find a super limited loser edition on white vinyl with free buttons, stickers, etc. at your local independent record store (ie. criminal records & decatur cd).
we were able to find this amazing vintage sesame street record player for clementine! she likes when her papa plays records in the kitchen, especially charley brown, so we thought it would be fun for her to have her own player.
this one was under $10 after shipping, so even it gets broken it’s not the worst thing in the world. we also grabbed some sweet sesame street book & record singles from the early 70s. you can find sets of them on ebay for around $7-$8. they are perfect for kids to scratch up and learn how to use a record player. clementine loves taking her records in and out of their sleeves and also dancing to the 70s intro song.
the new washed out album paracosm came out today via sub pop records. for those interested, you can find a super limited loser edition on green vinyl with a free bonus 7″ at your local independent record store (ie. criminal records & decatur cd). the LP & 7″ also include digital downloads, so it’s quite the deal!
the prince avalanche soundtrack came out today with new music from david wingo (aka ola podrida) & explosions in the sky. for those interested, you can find a limited white vinyl version of the soundtrack at your local independent record store (ie. criminal records & decatur cd). it comes in a gatefold sleeve and features a pretty sweet design from temporary residence. the LP also includes the digital download and a sticker!
clementine enjoyed her first record store day this morning! we went to decatur cd, which had a sizable crowd, but wasn’t too overwhelming. luckily my brother went along and could help when things got tight. clementine was a trooper and put up with the masses, she even fell asleep towards the end. i figure having gone to a record store day before her first birthday will give clementine some good indie cred down the road!
there was free beer, a ton of cool vinyl and free screen-printed bags from 88.5 wras. i grabbed the sigur rós – hvarf-heim double lp on clear vinyl and a ryan adams – heartbreak a stranger / black sheets of rain 7″ on blue vinyl, which has two bob mould covers. the 7″ artwork could be a hüsker dü album, which is fitting!
i kept things light this year as a whole, but i’m really happy with my purchases. you can check out what i grabbed last year here.

don’t forget today is record store day! there will be lots of rare vinyl treats up for grabs, including items listed here. in atlanta, you can hit up criminal records and wax ‘n’ facts or wuxtry and decatur cd in decatur.
see you there!
i am enjoying the latest album from damien jurado called maraqopa. it’s one of his best records, especially from start to finish, and that’s saying a lot with this being his 12th outing. there are some classic jurado tracks on this gem, including my current favorite museum of flight, which you can check out below.
the seattle times recently posted some covers of damien jurado songs by local artists, including one by jeremey enigk. from what i remember, enigk, of sunny day real estate fame, first introduced sub pop records to jurado back in the day and they ended up releasing his first few records. so these guys go way back. you can hear that cover here.
the box set includes the in the airplane over the sea and on avery island lps in new deluxe gatefold packaging, the everything is 10″ remastered with 3 bonus tracks and new artwork, the new ferris wheel on fire 10″ featuring eight previously unreleased acoustic recordings, the little birds 7″ with 2 unreleased recordings of the song, the you’ve passed/where you’ll find me now 7″ with unreleased 4-track demos from on avery island, the holland 1945/engine picture disc 7″ with fold-out poster, and two 24″x24″ posters, all enclosed in a fancy box. they really went all out with on this one!
you can find this amazing box set at current jeff magnum shows or on his new website for neutral milk hotel records. it’s a little pricey at $88, but you could easily have paid more than that for just the holland 1945/engine picture disc 7″ before this repress.
